Implementing generative AI into supply chains is on the rise

Generative AI exists as a distinct subset within the vast AI ecosystem, encompassing deep learning, robotics, and expert systems. What sets Generative AI apart is its exceptional user-friendliness and linguistic prowess. With the recent introduction of Chat GPT 4.0, over 100 million users have embarked on a journey of discovery, uncovering its remarkable capabilities. Furthermore, conversations about Generative AI's potential to revolutionize the way businesses approach customer service and supply chain management is becoming increasingly prevalent.

The abilities of Generative AI in Supply Chain

Generative AI has the potential to significantly alter, if not revolutionize, how supply chains are managed and organized. The major areas are:

Data Analysis: Generative AI can process data from various sources, including IoT sensors, historical data, and market trends, providing a comprehensive view of the supply chain.

Predictive Analytics: It leverages predictive models to forecast demand, optimize inventory levels, and anticipate disruptions.

Optimization: Generative AI can optimize routes, warehouse operations, and procurement strategies, reducing costs and improving efficiency.

Automation: Routine tasks such as order processing, inventory management, and demand forecasting can be automated, freeing up human resources for strategic decision-making.

“Gen AI has the potential to be a standard virtual assistant to anyone in supply chain.”

Anand Medepalli, Chief Product officer at Shippeo shared his thoughts: “Whether it is a transportation planner trying to manage a disruption risk, or a supply chain planner deciding on the right plans or even the supplier analyst that manages the supplier network - all need up-to-date information and insights at their fingertips to address the situation at hand.” For example, if a delay of shipment delivery at an automotive assembly plant is primarily due to a supplier plant delaying loading a truck, that information cannot wait until the monthly meeting between the supplier analyst and the supplier. That information needs to go to the supplier analyst right away so she can have a discussion with the supplier to ensure such delays don't take place anymore. “Gen AI as a purveyor of process automation across organizational boundaries, not to mention, beyond an organization - trading partner collaboration - can be very valuable to an organization's customers.” says Medepalli.

Applying Generative AI in the Supply Chain

The question that emerges is: does generative AI genuinely hold the potential to revolutionize the supply chain, or is it simply caught up in a wave of exaggerated expectations?

This is a matter that every organization must address, and the journey begins with a thorough understanding of the challenges inherent in integrating generative AI into supply chain operations. To gain a clearer perspective on the generative AI use cases that warrant investigation, it's crucial to elucidate the potential limitations. Furthermore, harnessing the extensive supply chain data network, generative AI marks a notable achievement in transitioning supply chain managers from reacting to being proactive in their decision-making processes. This progress also supports automated supply chain orchestration on a large scale.

Through generative AI, Shippeo is proactively advancing efforts to eradicate the widespread existence of data silos seen today. This is accomplished by applying generative AI, which sets the stage for an innovative approach to the exploration, monitoring, and utilization of supply chain data, enabling real-time, data-driven decision-making. Shippeo will leverage its extensive data network, granting users the ability to:

1. Manage disruptions in real time: Predict disruptions and find alternatives in real time to manage the impact of the disruption.

2. Scenario plan in a digital twin: Provide real-time visibility data to help create alternative scenarios and create answers a priori.

3. Enhance customer service: Provide the right information and next-best action based on scenarios from the digital twin to help a customer with their shipments.

4. Freight Audit & Pay: Provide information in time about when shipments were delivered or any dwell or detention times to help calculate accurate invoices and penalties accurately and at speed to improve cash flow in the supply chain and reduce appeals and negotiations.

The integration of generative artificial intelligence (Generative AI) into the intricate world of supply chains represents a transformative frontier. While the adoption of this technology may be evolving at a deliberate pace, its potential impact is clear to see.

Generative AI is poised to reshape the way we manage and optimize supply chains, with capabilities including data analysis, predictive analytics, and optimization to the automation of routine tasks. As Anand Medepalli, Chief Product Officer at Shippeo, aptly puts it, “Generative AI has the potential to be the standard virtual assistant for anyone in the supply chain, providing real-time insights and enabling rapid decision-making.”

However, it's essential for organizations to embark on this transformative journey with a clear understanding of both the possibilities and limitations of Generative AI. It's about transitioning from reactive to proactive decision-making, leveraging extensive supply chain data networks, and eradicating data silos to foster innovation and real-time, data-driven decision-making.

As we embark on this new era, organizations that embrace this technology, grasp its potential, and leverage its capabilities may well reap the benefits, ushering in a future of supply chain management that's not only more efficient and agile but also firmly rooted in data-driven excellence.
